History

The Coordinators of Volunteers Association (CVA) had its beginnings in 1984 when a group of volunteer coordinators created an informal support network for the professional development of volunteerism. The organization was named the Association of Directors of Volunteer Services (ADVS), and monthly meetings were hosted at member agencies.

In 1985, “Edmonton” was added to the name of the organization. The Coordinators of Volunteers Association was incorporated under the Societies Act of the Province of Alberta in 1987.

In 1993, a meeting was held between the CVA and other similar associations – the outcome was a decision to merge these groups and provide a single, wide-ranging resource for professionals in the field.

The Volunteer Management Group was incorporated under the Societies Act in 1994. The first AGM of the newly formed Volunteer Management Group was held in September of that year and included the election of the group’s first new Board of Directors.
